Full Tommy Album This Week On Audio Fossils...

Because nothing really says Christmas more than The Who's Tommy album, I will be playing the entire album on my show this week at 8pm. The show will start at 7pm, but possibly an hour earlier like it has the past two weeks.

Also, I highly recommend the new Hives album, The Black and White Album. Overall, it's some fun garage rock that sounds great. My rating: 4 /5.

No Show Tonight, Sports Broadcast...

There will be no Audio Fossils show tonight due to a double-header of FIU Basketball. I'll be back next week as usual.

Jackson 5 To Reunite...No, Seriously...

Apparently the Jackson 5 might be going on tour some time in 2008. While this is certainly suprising, I think the big question is "does anyone really care?" I know I don't.

I am amused, though.

No Audio Fossils Tonight....

As I said in last week's show, there will be no Audio Fossils show tonight. Instead, you can enjoy our delicious Beatles Thanksgiving programming that is going on all day. If you have any questions or comments, you can send an email to wrgp AT fiu.edu. Enjoy!

Langerado Announces Kick-Ass Line-up...

Langerado has announced their line-up for their 2008 festival, taking place March 6-9, and it looks pretty badass. Amongst many other artists, some of the highlights (for me, at least) include Beastie Boys, Thievery Corporation, Gov't Mule, Medeski Scofield Martin and Wood, Les Claypool, Umphrey's McGee, The Disco Biscuits, and Keller Williams. I'm disappointed by the lack of Trey Anastasio appearance, but I'll just have to deal with it.

Admittedly, it seems they're falling victim to a bit of an "identity crisis," as is very easy to do with an established music festival that keeps trying to out-do itself from the previous year. I can't help but scratch my head and wonder "what's with the hip-hop artists?," not that I'm complaining, of course.

Another item to note is that it will be held in the Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation, leaving its previous home of Markham Park in Sunrise. I don't think it'll make much of a difference for those of us in Miami as far as the commute goes. Personally, it'll be cool to check out the place where Phish held one of its festivals, leading to the biggest traffic jam the country has ever seen.

The Australian Pink Floyd Show December 1st at the Filmore

The Australian Pink Floyd show is coming to the Filmore at the Jackie Gleason Theatre in Miami Beach on December 1st. From what I'm told and from what I've heard, this is basically the most immaculate Pink Floyd cover band that you'll ever hear. I'll be giving out tickets on my show, so make sure to tune in.

Sorry for the lack of updates as of late. The "real world realm" has been keeping me busy, but I should be back to updating on a regular basis soon.

Playlist for Oct. 25...

Hello all. I'm back from New York, which was obviously awesome. I picked up few CD's from some Other Music and Kim's Video:

Genesis- A psychedelic band with some prog sound. (not to be confused with the Peter Gabriel/Phil Collins group)
Ophiucus - A very cool French prog/psych band.
The Joint - An excellent hard garage band.
Novos Baianos - Brazilian lounge bang, with a few psychedelic tracks. It's both very sexy and very good.
Moby Grape - A delicious compilation with some excellent hard garage rock.

It's refreshing to see there's still somewhere you can go to for excellent record stores with people who know what the hell they're talking about. With the (glorious) exception of Yesterday and Today Records, there's pretty much nothing left in Miami.

And so, by somewhat popular demand, here's the track listing for this week's show:

10/25/07

George Harrison - Art of Dying
Hot Tuna - Living Just For You
Odyssey - Angel Dust
The Rolling Stones - Have You Seen Your Mother, Standing In The Shadows
Osibisa - Beautiful Seven
Groundhogs - Ship on the Ocean

Wings - Venus and Mars/Rock Show/Jet (Medley)
Jefferson Airplane - 3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds
Black Sabbath - Hole in the Sky
Led Zeppelin - Sick Again
Stone the Crows - Big Jim Salter

Queen - I'm in Love with my Car*
Moody Blues - Gypsy*
Moody Blues - Sun Is Still Burning*
The Joint - Freak St.
The Joint - Dinosaur
Ophiucus - Djukela

Moby Grape - Indifference
Mountain - Mississippi Queen*

Steppenwolf - Monster*
Bill Haley and the Comets - Rock Around the Clock*
The Beatles - What You're Doing
The Beatles - You've Got to Hide Your Love Away

Guest DJ For This Week...

Many thanks to everyone who called in this past Thursday. It was nice to see the request line clogged for a good portion of the show.

I'll be out of town this week, but instead of a pre-recorded show DJ DeeLeet is kind enough to offer to cover the show, so he'll be filling in for me this week. You can call him up with all of your requests, as usual.

Taking Requests For Pre-recorded Show...

Audio Fossils on October 18th will be pre-recorded. Not only is that my birthday, but I'll be about 1,200 miles away and out of town.

If you have any requests for me to put into the pre-recorded show, send an email to djpduffman AT gmail.com or just comment below.

Review: Joni Mitchell - Shine

First off, I think it's important to start by saying that Robert Christgau of Rolling Stone magazine is a complete and utter tool. He is a fine example that that magazine has about as much integrity as a child rapist.

So I guess I'm somewhat obliged to comment on the elusive monkey that is on the figurative back of this album, which is "why the hell did she decide to release this on Hear Music?" Your guess is as good as mine. While it is ironic that she's anti-corporation and she decided to release this album on a big corporation, if there's one thing we know about Joni Mitchell is that she flat out doesn't give a damn what people think.

Shine incorporates all of the previous phases of her musical career and mixes it all together. Joni Mitchell has always had eerie sounds that, for some reason, sound incredible, and this album is no exception. Even in Mitchell's early career where she was just doing basic folk, she would hit high notes slightly off-key and then bend her voice to where it was supposed to be, making it sound brilliant. In this album the "eerie sounds" come from the general mash-up of different musical genres; she even makes accordions sound good. Joni also incorporates some modern music like electronic, which works out nicely.

I know some people may be annoyed by the fact that she's protesting things like war and the condition of the global environment, which are issues we're already tired of hearing about from artists like the Rolling Stones and Neil Young, but the thing is that Joni Mitchell does it infinitely better than they do. Joni wouldn't release an album unless she had something to say and it just so happens those topics are some of the things she has to talk about. Joni Mitchell protests these things in a much more subtle and classy way. She never once says the name of a country or political figure. Instead, she uses more subtle terminology to refer to them, in a way that only a linguist like Joni could.

There's the obvious fact that her voice isn't what it used to be, but instead of being arrogant, Joni realizes this and knows the limits that have been brought upon by her aging and decades of cigarette-smoking. But it isn't all bad news. Instead of the angelic and lust-worthy voice she had back in the 70's, she now has a more nurturing, almost motherly tone in her voice which I think is appropriate for the time and the content of her music.

Hey lyrics are as meaningful as they've ever been. I wonder whether she laughs to herself as she writes her lyrics, knowing how badass they are.

The name of the album is overused and generic, but it's important to realize all the others albums she's released in the past. Most of her albums are just named after a specific track in the album. She doesn't really get creative with her album names. "Court and Spark," "Blue," and "For The Roses" are all named after a track in the album, and she typically picks a track with a pretty standard name, so this time she decided to pick "Shine."

Joni is just as powerful as she was in her prime. She's not washed up, she's not old and tired. Her music is just as relevant as it used to be. While her previous album was supposed to be her last album and she's always had an attitude that she's a painter first and a musician second, I hope that we a few more albums to look forward to from her before she goes up to the "great gig in the sky."

Rating: 4/5

New Trey Anastasio Album, Apparently...

It seems like Trey Anastasio released a new album back in July, and I had no idea. It's supposed to be some sort of collection of cuts to quench the thirsts of fans in between his "real" albums, but allmusic is saying that it's actually better than "Shine" and "Bar 17," so I'm excited to listen to it. I'll try to get my hands on it soon to give it a proper review.

Also, you can expect a review of Joni Mitchell's "Shine" within the next few days.

Clear Channel Gets Bought...

It appears that the almighty superpower of terrestrial radio in America, Clear Channel, has been bought by a no-name company.

While this comes as a surprise for many, I think it's been a somewhat long-time coming. There has been speculation in the radio world as to when and if this was going to happen for a few years now.

While people who know me may expect for me to be more excited than a bouncing chihuahua, I'm not sure whether this will help radio. Obviously, it can't get much worse, but we'll have to wait and see what this "mysterious" company decides to do with Clear Channel. Seeing as they plan on selling off a lot of radio stations, there is the possibility of the overall quality of radio improving, but when companies like CBS Radio are going to buy most of them, it's hard to say whether anything will change.

But hey, at least there's hope.

For those of you playing at home, Bain Capital and Thomas H Lee Partners bought Clear Channel for $18.7 Billion.

Full story at BBC.

Classical Station Coming To Miami...

It seems like classical music will be returning full time to South Florida. WMCU 89.7 FM has been purchased by The American Public Media Group (pending FCC approval, of course).

I personally question how long this will last. We've seen new formats come and go, but in the end all that'll matter will be what the Arbitron ratings say. According to the Miami Herald article, however, we shouldn't have to worry about them flaking on us since they appear to be pretty hardcore when it comes to classical music.

I still remain skeptical, though. Afterall, this is South Florida, the premier wasteland for radio.

From the Miami Herald.

P Duffman Goes HD...

I recently purchased a JVC HD-R1 receiver for my car, and it's absolutely brilliant. Obviously, I purchased it at a lower price being the incredibly savvy shopper that I am. It's much nicer than my previous JVC receiver, who's cd-playing operation stopped working about a year ago and recently began turning on and off whenever the hell it pleased. The big deal, though, is that it's HD. While I've always poked fun of HD radio right from the beginning, I figured I may as well ante up the extra cash for it to check it out for myself.

For the most part, it's pretty much what I expected. The clear channel HD2 channels are pretty much crap, while some of the other HD2 channels are pretty fun. WDNA (Serious Jazz) sounds glorious in HD. The drum hits are crisp and tight and the horns sound incredibly pure. WLRN's HD2 classical channel is awesome, too. The Coast's HD2 channel is entertaining; hearing "We Didn't Start The Fire" in HD is never a bad thing.

Meanwhile, stations that are utter shit are proving this to be even more evident with their poor use of HD. Power 96 and Hot 103.5 seem to be having radio sex via-HD2 channels. Power 96's HD2 channel sounds like Hot 103.5. Meanwhile, Hot 103.5's HD2 channel sounds like Power 96. Way to give the public more variety, dumb-fucks.

And as if poor programming wasn't enough, they've decided to not only slap the listeners in the face, but to also jam an over-sized dildo into their assholes by compressing the hell out of their audio, mainly 93 Rock. Wait...it's HD...isn't it supposed to sound better? Yeah, that's what I thought, too. It turns out the geniuses over there decided it'd be a good idea to compress their HD audio, making their normal analog signal sound better.

Anyway, I still haven't fully gotten into HD radio, but I think I've gotten a pretty accurate taste of it so far.

With my recent purchase, I will now own something and be adept in the following forms of radio:

  • AM Radio
  • FM Radio
  • Shortwave Radio
  • Satellite Radio
  • HD Radio
All I need now is to get a HAM license, though I'm not sure I'll actually bother with that.

Audio Fossils On The Internets!

Hello everyone.

Yes, I figured it was time to give Audio Fossils its own space on the interwebs. This site/blog will be dedicated to keeping listeners informed of things going on with the show, but most importantly it will keep you all updated on random crap, because we all need more random crap in our lives.

While the details and aesthetics of the blog are still being worked on (I know the colours might not be the best thing in the world), everything else is pretty much set to go.

So, bookmark this page to check back on updates, and those of you who are a bit more web-savvy can add the RSS feed to whatever RSS handler you have.
